EDENTON — Edenton police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect believed to have vandalized more than 30 locations throughout downtown in a widespread tagging spree early Saturday morning, Dec. 27.
The graffiti was discovered at daybreak on Dec. 27, though police say surveillance footage shows the vandalism occurred around 2:30 a.m. Officers and community members began noticing defaced properties throughout the morning.
Police Chief David LaFon said the department is taking the incident seriously.
“These actions impact the safety, appearance, and pride of our community, and such behavior will not be tolerated in Edenton,” he stated in a release issued Thursday, Dec. 31. “The Police Department is actively investigating this incident and is committed to holding those responsible accountable.”
Under North Carolina law, graffiti vandalism is typically charged as a Class 1 misdemeanor, which carries a mandatory minimum fine of $500 and requires at least 24 hours of community service if community or intermediate punishment is imposed. However, individuals with two or more prior vandalism convictions can face felony charges, which carry the possibility of jail time.
North Carolina law defines graffiti as any intentional mark made with spray paint, markers or pens, or even scratches on real property, whether public or private.
Police have released a photo (below) of the individual they believe is responsible for the vandalism. Anyone with information is asked to contact Chief David LaFon at 252-482-5144 ext. 103 or via email at david.lafon@edenton.nc.gov.
