HYDE COUNTY — In the days following a tragic motorbike crash that claimed the life of one child and left another seriously injured, Hyde County has responded in a way many residents say reflects the heart of a small, rural community: by coming together.

Recap — The crash occurred Monday afternoon, Dec. 15, in the Nebraska area of Hyde County and sent shockwaves through the close-knit communities of Engelhard and Swan Quarter. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a minibike collided with a Volkswagen sport utility vehicle at approximately 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Nebraska Road (SR 1111) and High Road.

The dirt bike was operated by a 12-year-old boy, Xavier Reynolds, who died as a result of injuries sustained in the collision. More on him in a minute.

A 11-year-old boy riding as a passenger, Rylan Wainwright, was seriously injured and was transported by helicopter from the scene to a hospital in Greenville for medical treatment. He is on the mend — that’s good news. More on him too.

Authorities said the boys were from the Engelhard and Swan Quarter areas.

The adult female driver of the SUV remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation, according to Hyde County Sheriff’s Office officials. Authorities did not report any serious injuries to the occupants of the SUV.

No charges have been filed, and due to the ages of those involved, no additional identifying information has been released.

Investigators with the Highway Patrol reported that the minibike failed to stop at the intersection before entering the roadway, resulting in the collision. Troopers also said neither of the boys was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.

Emergency responders arrived on scene shortly after the crash was reported.

As news of the accident spread, grief quickly turned into action. Community members began asking how they could help the affected families, prompting an outpouring of support coordinated largely through word of mouth and social media.

“Many have asked how they can help the families of the two boys involved in the recent motor bike accident,” a post shared on the Hyde County Happenings page stated.

In response, a special “Gas only” account was established at Ethco Oil and Gas in Engelhard for Jodi and Kyle, identified as Ryland’s mother and stepfather. The account is intended to help cover travel expenses associated with hospital visits, future rehabilitation care, and doctor appointments for the injured child.

Donations can be made directly at Ethco Oil and Gas, where contributors are asked to give donations to Gina (Beverly) Roberts in the gas office during weekday business hours. Donations may also be placed in an envelope labeled with her name and given to Lois Blanks or another employee at the front of the store.

In addition to the gas account, community organizers encouraged residents to provide direct assistance through gift cards. Those who know Jodi or Kyle personally may offer gas cards, food cards, Food Lion cards, or Dollar General cards to help ease daily financial burdens during an already overwhelming time. Organizers also offered to establish a designated drop-off location if needed.

Support efforts have extended beyond immediate financial needs to include emotional care and gestures of comfort, especially as the holiday season approaches.

Special attention has also been directed toward Javier Reynolds and his family. Organizers shared that they had spoken with the family of “Javier’s (Xavier’s twin)” and worked together to come up with a plan to bring him some Christmas cheer during an otherwise heartbreaking period.

According to those involved, Javier enjoys dining at Martelle’s Feedhouse Restaurant in Engelhard, and gift certificates to the local restaurant are welcomed. He also enjoys gaming with friends, making Visa and Amazon gift cards appropriate options for those looking to contribute in a personal way.

A “Meal Train” has also been suggested to help Javier’s family with daily meals, with organizers indicating details would be shared publicly if one is established. For those wishing to send cards or mail, Javier’s mailing address has been shared as 3508 White Plains Road, Engelhard, N.C. 27824.

“Both families thank each of you for all the thoughts, and prayers, food, visits and just being there for them,” the Hyde County Happenings post stated.

The message went on to encourage continued prayers not only for the families directly impacted, but also for Mattamuskeet Campus students, staff, and faculty, as well as the wider Hyde County community. “Hyde County is like one big family,” the post noted.

That sentiment has been echoed repeatedly in conversations among residents, many of whom say the tragedy has been felt deeply across schools, churches, workplaces, and neighborhoods.

Churches have reportedly included the families in prayer lists, friends and neighbors have dropped off food and cards, and strangers have stepped forward to help in whatever ways they can. For some, that has meant donating a few dollars for gas. For others, it has meant offering meals, rides, or simply being present.

When I first heard about the crash, I didn’t want to ask the Sheriff’s Office for the names for fear I might know who was involved. Other media outlets seeking clicks reported the names – probably causing more harm than good for grieving families and the community, who already knew who had been killed, injured – after all, Hyde County is a tight community.

Here’s what I can tell you about the boys involved in the accident:

Xavier – a student at Mattamuskeet. He was a good kid, street smart. I figured he’d be in business for himself someday – very interested in making money. Xavier was popular among his peers.

Javier – you’re in my prayers. You’ve got a keen mind and I suspect that you’ll go to college someday – good writer – keep up the good work.

Rylan – You’re a tough kid — I hope you get to feeling better. Thank you for teaching me about Hyde County, particularly about small villages and shrimping/fishing. You have a great sense of humor.

Xavier’s memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service.

The tragedy has underscored both the fragility of life and the strength found in standing together — a reminder, many say, that even in the darkest moments, a community can still shine through shared compassion and care.
