BY MILES LAYTON

Early Monday morning I got a text from Laurie Buckhout saying she’s been appointed to serve as deputy assistant secretary of defense for cyber policy.

Laurie, congrats!

Flashback – Though Buckhout narrowly lost the race to represent the 1st Congressional District, she gave Democrat Don Davis a run for his money in his bid to be reelected to congress. Too soon to tell what 2026 will look like for Republicans who came within a whisker of beating Davis in the state’s most expensive congressional race during the 2024 campaign cycle. Photos by Christina Williams.

A resident of Edenton, Buckhout poses with some familiar faces from local law enforcement.

Buckhout looked great at President Trump’s inaugural balls.

The Office of Secretary of Defense – Google Pete Hegseth – oversees all of cyber policy.

What is cyberspace? Answer — A global domain within the information environment consisting of the interdependent network of information systems infrastructures including the Internet, telecommunications networks, computer systems, and embedded processors and controllers.

What does the deputy assistant secretary of defense for cyber policy, working under the assistant secretary, do?

According to the DoD’s job description, “The Assistant Secretary of Defense for Cyber Policy establishes and oversees the implementation of DoD cyberspace policy and strategy. Integrates national cyberspace policy and guidance with DoD cyberspace policy. Provides guidance and oversight on DoD cyberspace activities as they relate to foreign cyberspace threats, international cooperation, engagement with foreign partners and international organizations, and implementation of DoD cyberspace strategy and plans, including those related to cyberspace forces, capabilities, and their employment.”

Since that is “government-speak” — I don’t know what any of that means. However, I suspect Buckhout will be leading to the effort to formulate national cyber policy, maybe put folks like Dr. Moriarty — the cyber villain from the Sherlock television series — behind bars.

She will be DEPUTY Assistant, Not “Assistant” as you write regarding the job description. Misinformation dear.

Ok, misleading then. Why not note in your article that the job description aplies to both. DEPUTY is an important factual part of the title. Glad she could find a job, but seems to be DEI job placement.

No way a DEI replacement. Colonel Buckhout has worked extremely hard for our country and accomplished amazing things as a military officer and business leader …. Just amazing and thus is the fact type of leader we need in cyber preparing for the next war

The job descriptions for both positions are the same, according to the Department of Defense. So that’s not “misinformation,” dear.
