When Aces’ wrestlers Gavin Pierce and Steven Ferebee competed this past weekend at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association State Championship in Greensboro, they did their best – learning lessons that will last a lifetime.
Competing in the 215-pound weight class, Pierce won his first match 8-4, but battled through a shoulder injury and lost the second match by two points.
“It was a great opportunity to be a part of the best wrestling North Carolina has to offer,” Pierce said. “I am proud of my performance. Competition at the state level is the best of the best and just getting the opportunity to be there is an honor.”
Competing in the 285-pound weight class, Ferebee lost both matches – he’s pleased with being able to compete at the top level, “leaving it all on the mat.” His favorite wrestling move is the hip toss — “It’s fun to do” and he may get a chance to do that again next year.
“I’m a junior so I’m definitely looking forward to next season,” he said.
Looking back on this past season, Ferebee said his best memories are “Getting to spend time with teammates and building a bond with them and other wrestlers.”
Pierce’s favorite move was in the gator roll, but the opportunity to use that didn’t present itself at the state meet.
“I never had the opportunity to do the gator roll this weekend.” Instead Pierce’s strategy was – “No other unique holds just working to earn points and stay on top.”
State meet was Pierce’s last wrestling match for the Aces.
“Yes it is bittersweet,” he said. “I have enjoyed all the memories, friends and lessons learned but I am looking forward to the next chapter in my life.”
Any words of advice do you have for future Aces’ wrestlers?
“Be present, give it your all each practice and match because it goes by fast,” Pierce said.
Ferebee added, “Give it your all, stay dedicated, and believe in yourself.”
