Next event to be held Nov. 19 at Edenton Baptist Church
SUBMITTED REPORT
Mental health is often in the news these days.

Several area churches and agencies have partnered to present a series of programs on mental health topics. The goal is to raise awareness and help local residents learn more about risk factors and warning signs of various mental health challenges, as well as locally available resources. It is our hope that through better understanding, members of our community can help reduce stigma about mental health disorders and encourage support for those who are struggling.
Betsy Johnstone facilitates the Mental Health Connection, a series of faith-based gatherings about mental health, resources and support.
The series opened in September at St. Ann Catholic Church and a second gathering was held on Oct. 15 at Edenton United Methodist Church.
Guest speakers have included Lorrie Meads from Albemarle Regional Health Services, Keith Hamm from Mobile Crisis Services, and Sheriff Scooter Basnight who shared the value of Crisis Intervention Training in his department.
The next gathering of The Mental Health Connection will take place at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 19 at Edenton Baptist Church, 200 S. Granville St., Edenton. Guest speakers will include Dr. Koby Strawser, pastor at Edenton Baptist Church and Mitchell Wynn, from SnapBack NC.
Topics will include anxiety, coping with the holidays and counseling and peer support.
Future meetings will take place at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Jan. 21, 2025 at 6:30 p.m., and at Providence Missionary Baptist Church on Feb. 18, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. Each gathering will last approximately one hour and will offer light refreshments, time for questions, and print resources.
The meetings are free and open to all interested individuals. If the series of five meetings are well-received, more conversations will be held in 2025.
